class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The context: why Italic deer end up in the Serre<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5b6101d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5b6101d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"135\" data-end=\"946\">The italic deer<em data-start=\"153\" data-end=\"178\">(Cervus elaphus italicus<\/em>) is an endemic Italian subspecies, relict, concentrated almost only in the Mesola Forest (Ferrara), with about 300 individuals, the result of high inbreeding and with a real risk of extinction in case of epidemics or extreme events.<br data-start=\"415\" data-end=\"418\">Already for years there has been a National Conservation Program for the Mesola Deer, drawn up by ISPRA and the Ministry of the Environment, which envisages the creation of a second autonomous population in another suitable area. Video trapping in the Park.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e65afc4 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"e65afc4\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3128196 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3128196\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">2023 - The launch of the operation and the first transfers<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f64a823 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f64a823\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"1656\" data-end=\"1883\">In March 2023, the first nucleus of 20 italic deer, transferred from the Mesola Woods, is released in the Serre Park.<br data-start=\"1832\" data-end=\"1835\">WWF officially announces that the goal is:<\/p><ul data-start=\"1884\" data-end=\"2055\"><li data-start=\"1884\" data-end=\"1954\"><p data-start=\"1886\" data-end=\"1954\">transfer at least 20 individuals per year, for three years (2023-2025),<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1955\" data-end=\"1987\"><p data-start=\"1957\" data-end=\"1987\">Up to 60 total deer,<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1988\" data-end=\"2055\"><p data-start=\"1990\" data-end=\"2055\">creating a second autonomous population within the park.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2057\" data-end=\"2102\">Procedures follow international standards:<\/p><ul data-start=\"2103\" data-end=\"2354\"><li data-start=\"2103\" data-end=\"2157\"><p data-start=\"2105\" data-end=\"2157\">Selective capture in Mesola, controlled sedation,<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2158\" data-end=\"2194\"><p data-start=\"2160\" data-end=\"2194\">Veterinary checks, marking,<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2195\" data-end=\"2271\"><p data-start=\"2197\" data-end=\"2271\">transport to Calabria under the responsibility of the Carabinieri Forestali,<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2272\" data-end=\"2354\"><p data-start=\"2274\" data-end=\"2354\">Release in a suitable and initially controlled area within the Serre.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2356\" data-end=\"2423\">As early as 2023 national and international media are telling the story:<\/p><ul data-start=\"2424\" data-end=\"2678\"><li data-start=\"2424\" data-end=\"2578\"><p data-start=\"2426\" data-end=\"2578\"><strong data-start=\"2426\" data-end=\"2444\">International<\/strong> (quoting <em data-start=\"2458\" data-end=\"2472\">The Guardian<\/em>) speaks of &#8220;sixty specimens transferred from Emilia-Romagna to Calabria&#8221; to save the subspecies.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2579\" data-end=\"2678\"><p data-start=\"2581\" data-end=\"2678\">Portals such as <strong data-start=\"2594\" data-end=\"2606\">LifeGate<\/strong> recount the project as an emblematic case of Italian &#8220;rewilding.&#8221;<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2680\" data-end=\"2902\"><strong data-start=\"2680\" data-end=\"2742\">End of 2023: full-scale operation and second wave of releases<\/strong><br data-start=\"2742\" data-end=\"2745\">Two italic deer releases are carried out in the Serre in 2023, the last one in late October, again subject to ISPRA validation.<br data-start=\"2887\" data-end=\"2890\">At the end of the year:<\/p><ul data-start=\"2903\" data-end=\"3290\"><li data-start=\"2903\" data-end=\"3079\"><p data-start=\"2905\" data-end=\"3079\"><strong data-start=\"2905\" data-end=\"2929\">RaiNews TGR Calabria<\/strong> devotes a report to the project, highlighting the role of the Serre Park as an &#8220;ally&#8221;
